She was an Italian physician and educator, the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy. Born in 1870, she developed her method of education early in this century. She devoted her life to the education of children and was honoured and respected throughout the world at the time of her death in 1952.

The Montessori Method is an approach to education which emphasizes the potential of the young child and which attempts to develop this potential by means of a prepared environment utilizing specially trained teachers and special teaching materials.

She developed her method because she was so distressed with the usual rigid teaching techniques. Feeling that the young child had more potential than educators realized, she began to develop this potential by a sensorial approach (teaching the young child through his natural interest in exploring the world through his senses).

This term was used by Montessori to differentiate the process of learning in the very young child from that of the conscious process of the older child or adult. The young child takes in impressions from everything in his environment. He learns everything without knowing he is learning it. It is the result of this process that the language first spoken and mannerisms first manifested will be a reproduction of those absorbed from the child's immediate environment.

The term "Sensitive Period" is Montessori's name for age periods when the child shows unusual capabilities in acquiring particular skills. A modern name for this phenomenon might be "windows of opportunity."

Montessori discipline is an "inner discipline" - control which the child develops over his own behavior through his interest in the Montessori environment and materials. Dr. Montessori noted that many so-called undisciplined children were really frustrated by lack of proper stimulation and would become happier and self-controlled after a period of time in a Montessori class.

The ideal size of a Montessori class is 30 children per 2 educators and a support staff. It is important to leave your child in the Montessori environment for a minimum of two years if any of the advantages offered in the environment are to be absorbed by the child. The teacher's job is not to 'teach' in the usual sense, but to encourage the child to 'learn how to learn'.

In this play area, we have more dramatic non-toxic play equipments. Our outdoor play area is for children of higher classes. Our pre-primary students get to play thrice a week whereas our primary students get to play twice a week. Also checkout our 7th Point of “9 Best Practices at Agasthya Vidyanikethan”

At Agasthya Vidyanikethan, we sanitize twice a day, plus we have a professional cleaning support staff that cleans the entire school at the end of every working day. Sanitizing means we use bleach water or Lysol to kill bacteria and viruses. At the minimum, after lunch and at the end of the day, we clean the table tops, chairs, bathroom counters/toilets/flusher/faucets, door knobs, and much more. We go far beyond State requirements. In fact, our school is so clean that our parents have remarked often how wonderful it is that their school is always sparkling and fresh-smelling. Cleanliness is one of our top priorities. It is part of our school ethos to promote healthy eating. We also encourage good manners when eating together and allow the children plenty of time to finish their food. Certainly children have to bring snacks/lunch to school. Our children of pre-mont get a snack break of 25 min, M1 and M2 get a snack break of 20 min whereas our M3 and primary children get both a snack break of 15 min and lunch break of 30 min. At Agasthya Vidyanikethan the support staff and educators are always at the service of our students particularly the younger ones in assisting them to complete their snacks/lunch boxes. However we urge our parents not to send extra food and would insist to send optimal quantity of food and ensure balanced diet.

Healthy and Nutricious diet plays a very vital role in the physical and mental development of a growing child. Children at their early years of growth, are very active and will need a complete overall diet to meet all the nutritional needs their body may need. Every individual child has his/her own needs, limits and tastes. Sometimes children may not want to eat as much as they usually do, or they may want a little extra than their usual limit.

Some parents have a myth that the more their children eat, the more healthier their kids grow up to be which is very much wrong. A well balanced diet is very important.

Many parents are oblivious to the needs of their children. It has been found that they are sending inappropriate quantities and quality of food as mentioned below.

  • 4 – 5 big chapathi’s / dosa’s
  • A big box full of upma
  • Rice dishes everyday
  • A cup full of dry fruits
  • Biscuits everyday

Such monotonous food definitely cannot be enjoyed by a 3 – 4 year old child. Also the food which is not enjoyed eating cannot do any good to the body of a child.

Hence, in this regard, the management of Agasthya Vidyanikethan has come up with a food chart for M1 and M2 students as mentioned below. Parents are requested to following this chart everyday without fail.

Monday 2 palm sized chapathi with a cup of sabzi or curry
3 – 4 pieces of Badam and Cashew
4 – 5 pieces of apple / banana / orange
Tuesday A large handful of rice dish
3 – 4 pieces of Pista / Dates
4 – 5 pieces of raw cucumber / raw carrot
Wednesday 2 palm sized dosa with a cup of sabzi or curry
3 – 4 pieces of Walnut / Anjeer
4 – 5 pieces of pomegranate / Melons / sweetlime (Musambi)
Thursday 2 – 3 medium sized idlis with chutney
3 – 4 pieces of dry grapes / Badam
4 – 5 pieces of green grapes / Mango / Kiwi fruit
Friday A cup full of Semiya (Shavige)
A small cup of cooked beans and sprouts of different kinds.
4 – 5 pieces of Musambi / Orange / papaya

We expect full cooperation from the parents end in this regard.

The main virtue of all educators at Agasthya Vidyanikethan is to enable every child grow independently. Simultaneously it is important for every parent to understand that a child spends only 1/3rd of the time in school and 2/3rd at home. We place great importance on reading and ask parents to help by spending a little time every day sharing and talking to your child about their book. Book bags need to be taken home every day and returned the. next morning. In addition to reading, there are regular spelling tests and simple mathematical activities which we hope parents will support by working with their child for a few minutes every day.We firmly believe that close cooperation between our teaching staff and you as a parent is essential for providing the best possible education for your child. We recognise that the process of learning starts long before school begins, and that the influence of home is a major factor in the overall development of a child. Young children need the interest, support and encouragement of parents and teachers alike in order to develop the confidence to learn. In general academic or non-academic discussions with your child on a daily basis would build a strong bond which would pay heavy dividends in the years ahead.

If your child is unwell and needs to stay at home, please let us know straight away by telephone or email. If you do not do this, your child’s absence will be marked in the register as unauthorised. If a child is absent for more than two days, then the child needs to have a doctor’s certificate confirming that he she is well enough to return to class. If your child has diarrhoea or is vomiting, we strongly recommend that they stay at home for at least 48 hours after recovery.

We recognise that there are times when parents may have to take children out of school for personal reasons or a family holiday. Please always inform us in writing so that we can authorise the absence. Agasthya Vidyanikethan appreciates that due to the diverse nature of our children, school holidays may not coincide with a family’s religious celebrations. Time off school will usually be allowed for religious observances. Please send a letter to the principal office/ class teacher in plenty of time before the start of the requested absence.

In the event of your child suffering from an illness or being involved in a serious accident at school, we will contact you immediately. If we are unable to contact you or if we sense that immediate medical help is required then we will authorise any immediate medical treatment from a qualified children specialist.
